Every August, I notice a familiar rhythm in Austin — students are wrapping up their summer freedom, parents are scrambling for back-to-school checkups, and our phones at Central Texas OMS start ringing with questions about wisdom teeth. It’s one of my favorite times of year, honestly, because it reminds me how much this community prioritizes health before the demands of a new school year set in. If you’ve been putting off addressing that nagging jaw discomfort or a wisdom tooth that’s been slowly making itself known, August is genuinely one of the smartest times to act.

The summer heat in Austin is no joke, and hydration plays a bigger role in oral health than most people realize. When we’re dehydrated — and in Central Texas summers, it happens fast — saliva production drops, and saliva is our mouth’s natural defense against bacteria and acid buildup. I encourage everyone in the Austin area to keep a water bottle close, especially if you or your kids are spending time outdoors for summer sports, band practice, or any of the back-to-school activities picking back up this month. Sugary sports drinks and sodas are tempting in the heat, but sipping on them throughout the day creates an acidic environment that wears down enamel over time. Water is always your best friend.

For college students and high school seniors heading into a new chapter, this is also the ideal window to evaluate wisdom teeth before a busy semester makes scheduling feel impossible. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth don’t always hurt right away — many people in the Austin community are walking around unaware of developing issues that an X-ray would catch early. Addressing these concerns now, while schedules are still flexible, means less disruption to classes, exams, and extracurriculars down the road. Recovery is far more manageable when you’re not mid-semester.

I also want to remind families that oral health doesn’t exist in isolation. Jaw pain, headaches, and ear discomfort can sometimes trace back to dental or surgical issues that go unaddressed for years. If something feels off — whether it’s soreness, swelling, difficulty chewing, or recurring discomfort — please don’t wait and wonder. Our team at Central Texas OMS is here specifically to evaluate and treat those concerns with care and precision.

Whether you’re a longtime Austin resident or a student who just moved to the area for school, I’d love to welcome you to our practice and help you start this next season feeling your best. A consultation is a low-pressure opportunity to get your questions answered and understand your options. Reach out to us at Central Texas OMS — we’re right here in Austin and ready to take care of you and the people you love most.
