Every August, I notice something familiar in the rhythm of our community here in Austin — that particular mix of summer winding down and the school year ramping back up. Families are busy, schedules are shifting, and for many young adults, this transition brings an important health milestone to the forefront: wisdom tooth evaluation. It is one of my favorite times of year to connect with the Austin community, because the conversations we have now can genuinely shape long-term oral health outcomes for teenagers and college students heading into a new chapter.

Summer break has traditionally been the ideal window for wisdom tooth extractions. Recovery time is more manageable when students are not juggling classes, exams, or extracurriculars. As that window narrows heading into fall, I want to encourage Austin families who have been putting off an evaluation to act sooner rather than later. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth do not resolve on their own, and waiting until pain or infection sets in almost always means a more complicated situation for everyone involved.

Beyond wisdom teeth, August is a great moment to think broadly about oral health habits. The heat here in Austin is no joke in the summer, and staying hydrated is genuinely one of the simplest things you can do for your mouth. Dry mouth reduces saliva production, and saliva is your body’s natural defense against cavity-causing bacteria. Encourage your family to reach for water throughout the day, especially when they are spending time outdoors. Sports drinks and sodas are particularly common this time of year, but their sugar and acid content can do real damage to enamel, so enjoying them in moderation and rinsing with water afterward makes a meaningful difference.

For athletes heading into fall sports seasons, now is also an excellent time to talk to your dentist or oral surgeon about mouthguards. Custom-fitted protection is far superior to over-the-counter options and can prevent the kind of dental trauma that leads to much larger interventions down the road. At Central Texas OMS, we are here to support the full spectrum of oral health needs — from routine extractions to more complex surgical care — and we are proud to serve the Austin community with that comprehensive approach.

Whether you have a high school student whose dentist recommended a wisdom tooth consult, a college student heading back to campus who wants to address something before leaving, or you simply have questions about your own oral health, I warmly invite you to reach out and schedule a consultation with us. Our team at Central Texas OMS in Austin is ready to walk alongside you with honest, compassionate guidance every step of the way. Do not wait for discomfort to make the decision for you — we are here, and we would love to see you.
