Every August, I notice something familiar in the energy around our office here in Central Texas OMS — families are in transition, students are preparing to head back to school or off to college, and there is a palpable sense of urgency to take care of health appointments before life gets busy again. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving the Austin area, this time of year always reminds me how closely oral health is tied to major life milestones. Wisdom teeth, in particular, tend to become a priority during summer break, when patients have the recovery time they need before the school year kicks into full gear.

For families in the Austin area, August brings a unique combination of seasonal factors that can genuinely affect oral health. The intense Texas heat means many people are reaching for cold sugary drinks, sports beverages, and frozen treats far more often than usual. While these are refreshing in the moment, the acids and sugars in these drinks can quietly erode enamel and accelerate cavity formation, especially in younger mouths. I always encourage Austin families to balance those summer indulgences with plenty of plain water — which also helps combat the dry mouth that dehydration can cause in our famously hot Central Texas summers.

Back-to-school season is also an ideal time to schedule a wisdom tooth evaluation for teenagers and young adults. Many wisdom teeth begin causing problems between the ages of 17 and 25, often silently, with crowding or impaction developing before any pain appears. Getting ahead of that process — rather than waiting for an emergency — allows for planned recovery time and a smoother experience overall. At Central Texas OMS, we take a conservative, individualized approach to every evaluation, making sure each patient and their family fully understands what we are seeing and why we may or may not recommend intervention.

Beyond wisdom teeth, I want to remind the Austin community that oral health is genuinely connected to whole-body wellness. Gum disease has documented links to cardiovascular health, diabetes management, and systemic inflammation. Staying current with dental checkups, maintaining a consistent brushing and flossing routine, and addressing jaw pain or bite irregularities early can make a meaningful difference in long-term quality of life. These are not small matters, and I take seriously the trust this community places in our team.

If you or someone in your family has been putting off a wisdom tooth consultation, a jaw concern, or simply has questions about oral surgery, I warmly invite you to reach out to us at Central Texas OMS. Our team is here to listen, to educate, and to provide care that feels personal and respectful. Whether you are a lifelong Austin resident or newly arrived in the neighborhood, we would be honored to be part of your family’s oral health journey. Please do not hesitate to call us and schedule a consultation — we are right here in your community, and we are ready to help.
