Every August, I notice something familiar in the rhythm of our community here in Austin — families are simultaneously winding down summer and gearing up for a new school year, and oral health often becomes a front-of-mind concern in a way it isn’t during other months. College students heading back to UT and other campuses want to take care of lingering dental issues before their schedules fill up, and parents are checking off every health box before the first bell rings. It’s one of my favorite times of year to connect with the Austin community, because the motivation to act on oral health concerns is genuinely high.
Wisdom teeth are easily the most common concern I see driving consultations this time of year. For many young adults between the ages of 17 and 25, late summer represents a rare window of recovery time before academic and athletic commitments make downtime nearly impossible. If your son or daughter has been told by their general dentist that wisdom teeth may need to be evaluated, I strongly encourage scheduling a consultation sooner rather than later. Erupting or impacted wisdom teeth that are left unaddressed can lead to crowding, infection, and discomfort that tends to worsen over time — and those problems rarely wait politely for a convenient semester break.
Summer heat in Austin also means we’re all drinking more, and unfortunately, sugary sports drinks, sodas, and sweetened iced coffees are everywhere. These beverages are particularly hard on tooth enamel because they combine acid and sugar in a way that creates the ideal environment for decay. My practical recommendation is simple: rinse with water after consuming anything sweetened or acidic, and try to use a straw when possible to minimize direct contact with your teeth. Staying well-hydrated with plain water isn’t just good for your overall health — it supports saliva production, which is one of your mouth’s natural defenses against bacteria.
Back-to-school season is also an excellent time to address any jaw pain, clicking, or facial discomfort that may have been dismissed as stress during the busy summer months. These can be early signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues or other conditions that respond well to early intervention. At Central Texas OMS, we’re proud to serve the greater Austin area with the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgical care, and we take the time to listen carefully before recommending any course of treatment.
Whether you’re a longtime Austin resident or a student new to our city, I want you to feel welcome here. My team and I are committed to providing compassionate, expert care to everyone in this community. If you have questions about wisdom teeth, jaw concerns, dental implants, or any other oral health issue, I warmly invite you to schedule a consultation with us at Central Texas OMS. We’d be honored to be part of your family’s healthcare team this fall and beyond.
